Na het Belevingscentrum op het begijnhof te Kortrijk en de begijnenhuizen op het Dendermondse hof sluiten we het drieluik ‘begijnenmusea in de kijker’ af in de Kempen met het Begijnhofmuseum* te Turnhout. Het leven van de begijnen op het Turnhoutse hof wordt vertelt doorheen een rondgeleide in de voormalige pastorie van Johannes Mermans, het Sint-Jansconvent.
Van vroeger tot nu: achtergrond en visie
Conservator Goris en pastoor Frickel startten in 1953 met het verzamelen van voorwerpen die ooit toebehoorden aan de Turnhoutse begijnen, alsook de begijnhofpastoors. De twee laatste begijnen van het hof en enkele leken hielde het museum open. Zes jaar later namen de ‘Vrienden van het Begijnhof van Turnhout vzw’ de verantwoordelijkheid mee op zich om de collectie aan te vullen. Door restauraties in 1997 werd de beschikbare oppervlakte vergroot en kon een opgerichte werkgroep de visie en doelstelling van het museum neerzetten: zowel informatie over het begijnenwezen als het Turnhoutse hof moest op educatieve wijze aan bod komen.
Doorheen het begijnenleven
Bezoekers krijgen eerst een filmfragment te zien waarin in hoofdzaak de geschiedenis en activiteiten van de Turnhoutse begijnen aan bod komen. Een rondgang doorheen de verschillende kamers, met o.a. een kamer opgedragen aan de laatste begijn, toont ons bijvoorbeeld een begijnenkeuken, een kantklossende begijn en de benodigdheden vanuit de hostiebakkerij. Archiefdocumenten zoals oorkondes alsook portretten van de laatste begijnen en de pastoor zijn te bezichtigen naast de begijnenklederdracht en enkele kerkelijke stukken.
In het oog springend topstuk vormt de Processionale, een muziekarchief van de begijnen in boekvorm. De 17 handschriften en 56 drukken uit de zestiende tot twintigste eeuw, gevonden in 2000, werden bestudeerd door vzw Resonant.

Via een crowdfundingsproject werd het benodigde budget opgehaald om het manuscript professioneel te digitaliseren, waarna het werd ingezongen door het Ensemble Psallentes. In het Begijnhofmuseum kunnen bezoekers het nu digitaal doorbladeren en beluisteren.

Elke woensdag van juli en augustus is het Begijnhofmuseum gratis toegankelijk. Om 14 uur start een rondleiding die je ook door het Begijnhofmuseum voert. Kinderen kunnen in de zomervakantie op schattenjacht met Vlieg: met behulp van een zoektocht verkennen ze het museum.
*In 2017 wordt een traject opgestart om het huidige concept van het Begijnhofmuseum opnieuw te bekijken en aan te passen.

After the Experience Center at the beguinage of Kortrijk and the beguine houses on the beguinage of Dendermonde we close this month with the Beguinage Museum of Turnhout. The life of the beguines during the last period of their existence is told during a walk through the rooms of the old pastorage of vicar Johannes Mermans, the convent of Saint Jean.
From then till now: background and view
Curator Goris and vicar Frickel started in 1953 with collecting belongings from the beguines and the vicars. The two last beguines got assistance from volunteers to open the museum. Six years later the group ‘Friends of the Beguinage of Turnhout’ decided to enlarge the collection. In 1997 restaurations were done: the ground floor was doubled and a complete vision was formed. It became clear that there would be an exposistion of the past of the beguines of Turnhout and the beguine movement herself should be explained.
Through the beguine life
Visitors can watch a short movie about the past of the most important activities of the beguines of Turnhout. Then follows a walk through the chambers: there’s e.g. a room where the last beguine is honored, an example of a beguine kitchen, a beguine puppet who makes lace and materials from the bakery. Some archive document and portraits of the last beguines and the vicar, the clothing of a beguine and church items are also exposed.
Recently the museum installed a piece to be proud of: a book with 17 hand writings and 56 pieces, dating from the sixteenth till the twentieth century. This music book of the beguines, called ‘the book of Procession’, was studied by vzw Resonant.

A crowdfunding was lanced to gather money to digitalise the manuscript. Next, it was sung by Ensemble Psallentes. Now visitors can see the book and listen to the beguine music while going through the pages on the screen.

Every Wednesday of Jul and August the Beguine Museum can be visitied for free. At 2 o’clock a guide tour starts at the entrance. For children there’s a tour available where they can follow a treasure hunt.
*In 2017 there will start a review of the museum.
