In het afgelopen jaar stonden de begijnen meermaals in de belangstelling. Achtereenvolgens vind u een overzicht van de manieren waarop deze vrouwen op de voorgrond stonden.
Via de blog ‘begijnhovenqueeste’:
April: de herdenking van de begijnse geschiedenis stond centraal. Op 14 april was het tien jaar geleden dat ‘s werelds laatste begijn, Marcella Pattyn, overleed. Haar heengaan betekende het einde van een unieke geschiedenis van Europese vrouwen die acht eeuwen lang voor een eigenzinnig levenspad kozen. Archieven en lokale begijnhoven zetten op vraag deze herdenking in de belangstelling via sociale media. ‘Begijnennieuws’ zette de herdenking en de respons centraal.
Mei: op 18 mei zette ik mijn tienjarige inzet voor de begijnen in de belangsteling. Zowel de start van mijn begijnse passie als de uitbouw kwamen aan bod. Een kritische noot maakte het geheel af.
Juni: een familiale kijk op één van de drie laatste begijnen van de vrouwenstad te Kortrijk stond deze maand centraal. De heer Johan Bossuyt deelde zijn herinneringen en aan zijn ‘(groot)tante Gusta’. Dit perspectief is nu een blijvende getuigenis van het erfgoed van deze begijn. Het artikel kende grote verspreiding, werd zeer positief onthaald en volop gedeeld via sociale media. Informatie over een begijn als ‘mens onder mensen’ sprak aan. Gusta bleek en blijft in herinnering gehouden te zijn in Kortrijk en daarbuiten.
Via sociale media – ‘begijnennieuws‘:
Op de facebookpagina ‘Begijnennieuws‘ kon u het laatste nieuws terugvinden in verband met restauraties of restauratiefasen van verschillende begijnhoven. Zo las u over de vorderingen op het Lierse hof en de gestartte werken aan de kerk van het Onze-Vrouwe ter Hoye begijnhof te Gent. Daarnaast vond u ook exclusieve foto’s en portretten van begijnen als profielfoto. Hier staan de begijnen als vrouwen van vlees en bloed te pronken. U kon zo reeds kennismaken met ondermeer juffrouw Virginie Scheers van het Groot begijnhof ‘Ten Hove’ te Leuven, de zussen Eugenie en Seraphina De Roo, begijnen te Aalst, en de Brugse begijn Emma-Françoise Van den Berghe.
Via onderzoekswerk naar een nieuw boek over de begijnse geschiedenis:
Het boek-in-wording ‘Wijze vrouwen‘ kwam verder tot stand. In 2022 zag het afgewerkte deel ‘Begijnhoven en markante begijnen’ het levenslicht. In 2023 was de ruwe versie van ‘Acht eeuwen begijnengeschiedenis’ af.
In 2024…
In 2024 wordt een finaal gedeelte ‘Acht eeuwen begijnengeschiedenis‘ verwacht. Dit deel zwaait de ‘oude’ denkpatronen over de begijnen de deur uit en zet een nieuw kader en kapstok voor u klaar. Daarnaast zal ‘Begijnennieuws‘ doorheen het komende jaar regelmatig een ‘mini-portret’ van een begijn voorzien. Op de overlijdensdatum van een begijn, krijgt ze via de facebookpagina beeld en woord.
En, zoals u gewend bent, steeds het laatste nieuws op begijns vlak…..

The past year the beguines were put in the spotlight. Read the ways in which they took their well deserved place.
On the blog ‘begijnhovenqueeste’:
April: the rememberance of the beguine herstory was the central point this month. On April 14th Marcella Pattyn, the last beguine died. her death marked the end of the unique beguine past. Archives and local beguinages remebered this day through their social media page.
May: on May 18th, I wrote about my work for the beguine heritage, then ten years counting. I wrote about the start of my passion for the beguines and the many ways I promote their heritage. I finished the pieve with a critical reflection.
June: one of the three last beguines from the beguinages of Kortrijk got all the attention. We got an inside in the family life of beguine Gusta Seurynck. Johan Bossuyt shared his memories about his greataunt Gusta’. This written piece forms a testimony from the life of this beguines. The article got lots of attention through social media and was shared nummerous time. Information about a beguine as aunt, beguine and misstress gives people a very human perspective. It also showed that Gusta was kept in memory in Kortrijk and beyond.
Through social media – ‘Community of beguine news‘:
On the facebookpage of ‘Community of beguine news‘ you read the latest news about restaurations of several beguinages. You could read about the works on the beguinage of Lier and the start of the restauration at the beguinage church of ‘Our Lady Ter Hoye’ at Ghent. The header of ‘Community of beguine news’ showed exclusive pictures and portratis of beguines. Beguine Virginie Scheers, who lived at the Large beguinage at Leuven, and the beguine sisters Eugenie and Seraphina De Roo, beguines at Aalst got a place. They followed the beguine Emma-Françoise Van den Berghe, beguine at the beguinage of Bruges.
Through research and writing on a new book about the beguines:
The writing and research for ‘Wise women‘ progressed. In 2022 the part ‘Beguinages and remarkable women’ was finished. In 2023 the rough version of ‘Eight centuries of beguine hertory’ was born.
In 2024…
In 2024 the goal is to finalise the part ‘Eight centuries of beguine‘. This part says goodbye to the old ideas about the beguines and welcomes a new, fresh view on them. On ‘Community of beguine news‘ I will regularly provide a ‘mini-biography’ of a specific beguine. On her remeberance day I will give her a voice.
