Het begijnse erfgoed bewaren betekent een ware uitdaging aangaan: zorg voor monumenten betekent blijvend restaureren. Hoe staan de zaken ervoor te Gent?
De restauratiewerken op de Gentse begijnhoven staan niet stil, zowel een aantal huizen van de voormalige Ter Hoye vrouwenstad als een huis aan de Begijnhofdries op het ‘oude’ Sint-Elisabethbegijnhof staan in de stijgers. Ook de begijnhofpoort van laatstgenoemd hof wordt momenteel aangepakt: een korte toelichting.
Achtergrond
Einde negentiende eeuw, een paar jaar nadat de begijnen hun nieuwe begijnhof te Sint-Amandsberg bewonen – dankzij het deskundig leiderschap van grootjuffrouw Julia Verhaeghe! – zet de stad Gent verdere stappen ter ontmanteling en afbraak van de voormalige vrouwenstad: enkele huizen en de groteske begijnhofpoort worden resoluut afgebroken. Dankzij inspanningen van ‘De Vrienden van Oud-Gent’ zal het poortgebouw in de jaren 1920 herrijzen aan de ringkant van het Bijlokemuseum. De stenen van het gebouw bestaan deels uit gerecupereerde en nieuwe materialen.

Restauratie
Momenteel staat het poortgebouw in de steigers ter herstelling van zowel de gevel, de daken en het schrijnwerk. Samen met het gebouw wordt ook de aangrenzende Armenpoort en de Baudelozaal aangepakt. De voorlopige planning geeft aan dat de werken tegen einde 2018 klaar zullen zijn.

Preserving the beguine heritage is a true challenge: care for monuments means processing ongoing restauration. How are things going in Ghent?
Restauration works on the beguine heritage are done on three places: at houses at the women city of Ter Hoye, at a house on the beguinage of Saint-Elisabeth (placed at the central square called ‘Begijnhofdries’) and the former gate building is renovated. Background
By the end of the nineteenth century, a few years after the beguines moved to their new women city at Sint-Amandsberg – a realisation of clever negotiation by misstress Julia Verhaeghe!- , the city of Ghent continues to destroy parts of the beguinage: a few houses and the gate are removed. The political work from the group called ‘De Vrienden van Oud-Gent’ will gain results: around 1920 the gate building of the old beguinage was rebuild at the Museum on the former monastry called ‘De Bijloke’. The stones of the gate building are a combination of new and original materials.

Restauration
Today restauration works on the gate building are in progress: the surface, the roof and all joinery will be inspected and refreshed. The adjacent buildings, e.g. the Room ‘Baudelo’, will be restaurated together with the central gate. By the end of 2018 all works should be finished.
